<lj-cut> This is a test to see if I can post something fairly long without forcing any of you to read it. </lj-cut>

 <lj-cut text="This is Only A Test">

OK...I know I followed directions here, but it doesn't appear to be working.  Anyone care to tell me what I'm doing wrong?

<lj-cut text="this is the short form"> This is the very long stuff that goes inside the cut. </lj-cut>
<lj-cut text= If I do this just as you said>  Then why is it still not working?!  </lj-cut>

I swear I am losing my mind.  Is this a feature that only works on premium accounts?

OK, yet another try:
<lj-cut text="Perhaps and Maybe"> This part here will not be visible to everyone </lj-cut>

I typed it all by hand.  What gives?!  Is it my computer?

You need the doublequotes. So:

This would actually work, if you had text following it, plus a </lj-cut> end tag as well.

It's definitely not a premium-only feature. Are you entering the characters directly into the posting box in LJ, or are you first typing them in an editor and pasting them in? Those greater-than/less-than symbols shouldn't even be visible, so I'm thinking maybe the editor made them into something fancy that forces LJ to display the symbols instead of acting on them?

If you were pasting the examples from Dave's comments, possibly that might have the same effect?

Are you using Rich text editing mode, or plain text/HTML? If you have buttons that you can press to make your text bold or change font size, then you're editing in Rich Text. That's my only guess....
