So, we have water in two walls, resulting in the mysteriously soaked carpets in two rooms adjoining them. I was going to try to go buy a full size rug shampooer with a good drying feature today, but we had 5 inches of snow on the driveway when I got up.

This is likely to be expensive. Perhaps worse than my original thought that it was the roof, which is 25 years into its 20 year predicted life span.

So, thinking that a large home equity loan is in my future, I started thinking. The walls are under where the two roofs meet against the south and west edges of the deck. We never use the deck because of mosquitoes, and one of my pipe dreams is to turn the upper level into a sun room, and the lower into a place for a jacuzzi and small sauna.

Then, there's the idea of adding geothermal to the house. Maybe including the roof and driveway. The driveway needs to be repaved anyway. And solar panels/shingles on the roof and/or a generator for those protracted icestorms. Extravagantly green.

I can wait another decade for a new kitchen, but keeping that in mind when redesigning would be smart.

And while I'm being extravagant...maybe a quick trip to someplace WARM?!

yikes!!!! i'm sorry it probably won't be a teeny repair. :(

on the lighter side, if you do all that house mod, it will be a lot easier now that so much stuff is going. ;) i'd definitely go for geothermal, but then again i'd love to put it into this house.

Hope--Normally, I would say, "Come to Houston!" But Houston isn't exactly warm right now, except maybe in comparison to Massachusetts. :(

Still, Hawaii sounds good.

Man. I am so sorry to hear about the house repairs. IT's one thing to elect to make changes, and another to be forced into it. That said, a sunrom sounds lovely. So does a jacuzzi. :-)

How far is where you live from NYC? I have to be in manhattan the first of July. As in, July 1. If I can afford it, I thought it might be fun to be in New England on Independence Day.

Uh, that thought process went: trip to someplace warm to summer trip to someplace not infernal to July in New England.
