Transitions
Feb. 24th, 2009 09:47 amMy Mom has started seeing her mother, who's been dead for almost 50 years. She's sitting in one or another of the chairs in the room, and often says "Frederica, it's time to come home." Mom is not at all disturbed by this.
When one of my patients has started seeing a dead relative telling them it's time to come home, not one of them has ever lasted a year. Usually far less. While Mom is physically doing quite well...well, this is a time of transition.
To twist the knife a little, Mom's functional recovery from 2 very bad and 1 moderately bad fracture is impressively good; her range of motion is probably in the top 5% for people with her injuries. Her muscle memory is pretty good. Unfortunately, her cognitive memory runs 2-15 minutes; if the conversation pauses for a few minutes, she may forget who she's talking to.
The good moments were good. She loves the girls, loves us, is delighted to see us and talk to us. The bad moments...she forgets pretty quickly, which is a blessing.
