Flashbacks to the great Mother's Day e-card i received--the "Mother of the Year" video.

"We've all been half-dressed, torso deep in yesterday's refuse, searching for a retainer that costs more than rent, thinking "Holy God, how did I get here?"--but she makes that sort of thing look so elegant."

Having elegantly recovered my daughter's missing retainer, I am contemplating getting elegantly inebriated. Given my tolerance, the single Mike's hard lime in the fridge should do the trick.

Impossible Choices

“A fish may court a bird, my dear,”
My father said to me
“But they will never find a home
In river nor in tree.”
So my father told me,
And I fear that it is true--
For I think I am that bird
And the fish I want is you.

A fish, he needs the water,
As a bird, she needs the sky
And wanting cannot change
What they must have unless they die.
And the point where air and water meet
Is precious little space--
Not enough to make a home
And barely to embrace.

Perhaps I’ll be a Kingfisher
And skim into your blue
And share some stolen moments
Within your world with you.
Perhaps you’ll be a flying fish
And briefly soar in mine--
Whatever we may try, my dear
We’ll find no friend in Time.

“A fish may court a bird, my dear,”
My father said to me
“But they will never find a home
In river nor in tree.”
So my father told me,
And I fear that it is true--
For I think I am that bird
And the fish I want is you.
