Pern on my mind
Jul. 18th, 2008 09:32 pm I've spent too much time this week rereading old Pern fanzines from the early to mid 90's. It's a very interesting experience...the stories are like snapshots inside our minds from that era. I was younger, naive by today's standards, and so were my friends. We were mostly writing about things outside our personal experience, and it was fun.
And now I'm grown up. (Yes, I'll admit it. The two kids and minivan started it, but the bifocals were the kiss of death.) Inside my head, my characters have been growing up, too. They have new stories that want to be written, a new perspective. And a sad lack of available fan clubs to do it in.
Interestingly, I left StarRise Weyr largely from lack of time, and partially because April Masters and I had a knock down, drag out fight over plot issues. We were, and presumably still are, both alpha bitches, and we clashed big time. From the perspective of 41 years, I have to say that she was right about every point. (She could have been more tactful, but, at the heart of it, she was right, I was wrong. And if I ever learn her current last name and e-mail address, I'll tell her so.)
So now I'm jonesing for 10th pass Pern, and Chantal innocently suggests that we...ReAwaken...StarRise. Because 5 people to write your stories with and share them with is better than nobody, and if we're lucky, we may get 10. Suddenly, an entire disaster sprang full blown into my head, and characters are sitting up and clamoring for attention.
I have no idea how we need to go about getting permission, or blessing, or whatever, to do this. And I have absolutely no time. The whole idea is insane. Thoroughly impractical. Completely irresistable....

Date: 2008-07-28 07:50 am (UTC)So, I've sent y'all an email tonight and I do have some questions if you don't mind answering them. I tend to be a wee bit protective of StarRise. It was my very first Pern group, and I believe I was just becoming a Really Active member about the time you killed off Ygrette. I really liked that character, btw - wasn't she the one with homicidal fantasies when her gold was proddy?
However, that being said - I'd love to see StarRise active again. :-)
And regarding April, her last name is now Legate. I imagine her AOL email still works: AMasters@aol.com. Being contacted about Pern now may be a little sensitive, however. She hasn't been active in StarRise since around 1997, and hasn't been active in Pern fandom since around 2001. Her departure was her choice, but it wasn't a gentle farewell.
