Why Pern?
I’ve been writing Pern stories since I was 13 years old…that’s over 2/3 of my life. While I’ve written plenty of other things over the years, there’s no other subject that I’ve come back to so often and so consistently. Given the survival of Pern fandom in various forms for some 30 years…what makes Pern so much fun to write?
I have opinions, of course. When have I ever not?
Forget Fairness. We all want to live in a fair, free, egalitarian society…but we prefer not to write about one. I suspect that this may be more true of women writers, but we seem to enjoy the “pushback” of a society that makes us work harder to attain our goals.
Someone to Love Me Best. The most primal human emotional need is to be loved best. With Impression, Pern gives us the unconditional, overwhelming love that we crave, without the messy compromise of real-life relationships.
Like Horses, with Wings! The attraction between women (and often men) and horses is ancient. We get to borrow their strength and speed for the price of our nurturing. What a great deal!
A Constant, Implacable Foe. Hardly anyone wants to write about Pern during the Intervals; it’s the threat of Threadfall that gives Pern it’s immediacy. Death raining from the skies, people huddled in stone buildings for safety, daring dragonriders risking their lives daily to keep the population safe…what’s not to love?
A Simpler World. So, your boss is a jerk, your rent is late, and you just blew your diet on cheesecake. On Pern they’re dealing with plague, famine, thread-burrows, and professional villains. Grab a cup of klah and sit down!
