Redefining Rape

Some of you may have heard about this on Facebook or by email alerts. For those who haven't--there is a proposed bill that would deny Medicare coverage for rape victims whose rapes were not sufficiently violent.

As examples? A nineteen year old college student who was drugged, then raped and sodomized by four football players. A woman who let a "friend" crash on her couch, and woke up during the middle of her own rape. A thirteen year old pressured into sex by an adult she trusted.

All of these--and sadly, these examples are all people I have known--would not qualify under the proposed bill as "truly" rape. No broken bones, no lethal force. Just shattered lives.

It takes a WHOLE lot to get me angry. This bill has gotten me instantly angry from the first moment I heard about it.

We here are both apalled at this and have sent in letters of protest already.

Also, it includes people who are mentally challenged as not being "violent" rape.

Grrrrrrrr.

If this is just a proposed bill--a lot of proposed bills never even make it out of committee, I'd hope this would be one of them.. Thanks for the links. I want to read more on this.
