NaNoWriMo...for kids?

A question out to all of you who know more about this stuff than I do:

Has anyone ever heard of a "junior" National Novel Writing Month? Leah is interested, and her language arts teacher supportive. I was thinking 5,000 words for middleschool, maybe 15,000 for high school? Is this a new concept, or is there actually information available?

I'm pretty sure Junior High and HS versions have been done, but I seem to recall that it's pretty much up to the teacher how to manage it. If you can't find info on the NaNo site you might page pernwebgoddess, she's a NaNo employee. :)

It says:

National Novel Writing Month happens every November!

It is a fun, seat-of-your-pants novel writing event where the challenge is to write an entire novel in just 30 days. That means participants begin writing November 1 and must finish by midnight, November 30. The word-count goal for our adult program is 50,000 words, but our Young Writers Program allows participants who are 17 years old and younger to set reasonable, yet challenging, word-count goals.

I know of at least one teacher who did a junior NaNo with students, and I expect there are more out there.
